We hope
that you will share our passion for the sounds of silence, vast
horizons and the wonders of unspoilt Karoo and Garden Route nature.
4x4 owners and tourists often don’t know where or with whom they can
go. I can take you on offroad routes in a region that inspired artists
and engineers, capitalists and crooks. A land of scarcity and of
abundance, with a history of both joy and sadness. |

Roots: |
Oudtshoorn, Capital of the Klein (Little) Karoo, is situated halfway
between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, 55 km North of George.
I was born and raised near Uniondale, on a farm bordering the majestic
Kammanassie Mountains. My father’s stories of his travels into Africa
with a 1939 Hudson on his way to Egypt, (stopped by World War ll
activities in Abbesinia), or his hunting travels in Portuguese East
Africa planted the seed in me. As far as I can remember I always had a
horse, a dog and a .22 rifle. At as young as eight I pioneered the
mysterious kloofs through head high ferns and thickets in the mystic
dusk under stinkwood, yellow wood and karee. I knew the rush of the
grysbok fleeing from its sleeping place, or the stench of the mighty
bosvark’s lair. I hung from a rope tied to a waboom to cut a honey
comb or three from a krans nest. From the driving seats of a tractor
and a Wyllis Jeep I visualised winding trails where a vehicle could
crawl up to the summit......
When I visit that farm on a rare trip down memory lane I realise that
the trail has never been built. Honey bees, shady trees, grysbok and
bosvark still maintain their reign. |
